Attractions and activities:
 
  • Beaches and swimming (warm water). Walks, watersports, sunsets, surfing, swimming, sunbathing, photography, coastal drives, quaint harbours and so much more to do.
  • Charter Cruises. Cruises leave daily from Gordon's Bay Harbour and Harbour Island. View the Helderberg from the deck of a boat.
  • A round trip from Gordon's Bay through to Hermanus and back to Somerset West over the Sir Lowry's mountain pass is an absolute must! We reckon that this is the most scenic coastal drive in the world!
  • Whale Watching Between June And December each year the False Bay coastline is visited by hundreds of Southern Right whales.
  • Steenbras Dam. The 4km road from Gordon's Bay to the dam situated on top of the Hottentots Holland mountain range offers magnificent views of the Helderberg. The dam is surrounded by 1200 hectares of pine plantations within which lie several secluded picnic areas, braai spots and even overnight accommodation. The waters are stocked with trout and fishing is permissible with a permit.
  • Stellenbosch historic town tours. Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town, dating back to 1679. The town of Stellenbosch is a mere 15 minutes drive from Abelia 12.
  • Wineland Tours. Apart from the Helderberg, wine farms and winelands, some of which are less than 1 1/2km from Abelia 12 we are less than 7km from the Stellenbosch Winelands boundary where Helderberg and Boland winelands meet and overlap.
  • Butterfly World. Just half an hour from Abelia 12 you'll find the largest butterfly park in Africa where butterflies fly freely in a beautiful covered tropical garden. .
  • Fruit and berry picking. Within 10 mins of Abelia 12 are various fruit, berry and strawberry farms where visitors are allowed to do their own picking in season. Visitors are taken on tractor tours through the orchards.
  • Vergelegen Wine Estate. With its magnificent backdrop of the Hottentots Holland mountains, Vergelegen is a must for all visitors, offering wine tasting, wine cellar tours, historic buildings, magnificent gardens, restaurants, a gift shop, picnicking among ancient trees in a camphor tree forest and much, much more.
  • Golf. The Helderberg boasts three 18-hole golf courses. Erinvale, Somerset West and Strand.
  • Shark Cage Diving. A once-in-a-lifetime experience is to come face to face with a Great White Shark. An exciting day adventure from Abelia 12, leaving early in the morning and returning in the evening. An adrenaline rush.
  • Helderberg Nature Reserve. Open 7 days a week, this is one of the natural treasures of the Helderberg. A nature lover's paradise of fynbos and birds. Beautiful scenic walks range in intensity from gentle to longer routes for the more energetic. Very popular restaurant and information centre.
  • Vintage Train Rides. Enjoy a vintage train ride up the magnificent Sir Lowry's Pass rail route with spectacular views over False Bay all the way to Table Mountain. Twice-weekly departures from Somerset West Station during December and January holiday periods.
  • Monkey Town. Monkey Town offers visitors the rare opportunity to touch and mingle freely with some tame species of monkey as well as to interact with more than 20 different species from the rain forests of Africa and the Amazon.
  • Helderbrau. One of the few privately owned small breweries in the country. They offer unique tasting German beer on tap. Private beer tasting and brewery tours can be arranged at any time by appointment.
  • Eco-tours: Quad bikes and motorbikes. Trail riding on motorcycles and quad bikes in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. 1600 plant species grow in this magnificent area alone. The routes have been designed by nature conservation personnel. A must for the adventure lover.
  • Horse Riding Trails. A horse lover's paradise, the area provides opportunities to take in trails between mountains, sea, vineyards and next to the many nature reserves in the area as well as offering horse riding on the beach. Those who can ride will experience a truly memorable Cape adventure.
  • Caledon Spa and Casino. Over the beautiful Sir Lowry's mountain pass to the natural warm-water spa that caters for day visitors. Visit the Caledon Casino, and end your day with a meal at one of the restaurants before heading home.
